How long does video compression take?
With GPU acceleration enabled (WebCodecs API), a 5-minute 1080p video typically compresses in 10-30 seconds. Longer videos or older devices may take more time. For example, a 500MB video usually takes 1-3 minutes depending on your hardware. The multi-thread FFmpeg fallback is slower but works on all browsers.
Can I compress videos for Discord?
Yes! We have built-in presets specifically for Discord: 8MB for Discord Legacy, 10MB for Discord Free, 25MB for Discord Nitro Basic, 50MB for Discord Nitro, and 100MB for large file sharing. Just select the Auto mode and pick your target size — we'll calculate the optimal bitrate automatically.
Why is my compressed video still too large?
If your compressed video is still too large, try these steps: 1) Select a smaller target size preset (e.g., 8MB for Discord), 2) Reduce the resolution from 1080p to 720p, 3) Lower the quality setting (higher CRF = smaller file), 4) Trim unnecessary parts of the video before compressing, 5) Mute the audio if it's not needed, or 6) Switch to WebM format which can be more efficient for web content.
Will compression reduce video quality?
Some quality loss is inevitable when compressing, but our smart encoding minimizes visible quality reduction. The 'Best Quality' preset uses CRF 20 for near-lossless compression. 'Best Balance' (CRF 26) provides an excellent trade-off between size and quality. 'Smallest File' (CRF 32) maximizes compression for email and messaging apps where file size matters most.
Can I trim my video after compression?
Yes! After compression, click the 'Trim Video' button to select and extract a specific segment of the compressed video. This is useful when you only need a portion of the video — for example, cutting a 30-second clip from a 5-minute recording. The trim feature uses stream copy when possible for instant processing.
Does it work on mobile devices?
Yes, VideoReducer works on mobile browsers including Chrome for Android and Safari for iOS. However, for very large videos (500MB+), we recommend using a desktop browser for better performance and more available memory. The tool is fully responsive and optimized for both touch and mouse interfaces.
